Bursts of activity in collective cell migration.

چکیده
Dense monolayers of living cells display intriguing relaxation dynamics, reminiscent of soft and glassy materials close to the jamming transition, and migrate collectively when space is available, as in wound healing or in cancer invasion. Here we show that collective cell migration occurs in bursts that are similar to those recorded in the propagation of cracks, fluid fronts in porous media, and ferromagnetic domain walls. In analogy with these systems, the distribution of activity bursts displays scaling laws that are universal in different cell types and for cells moving on different substrates. The main features of the invasion dynamics are quantitatively captured by a model of interacting active particles moving in a disordered landscape. Our results illustrate that collective motion of living cells is analogous to the corresponding dynamics in driven, but inanimate, systems.

Background & Objective: Cancer metastasis is the primary cause of cancer morbidity and mortality, it accounts for about 90% of cancer deaths. Cancer treatment has improved significantly, due to early detection and inhibition of cancer growth. The ability to invade and migrate is important in malignant tumor cells. The study of cell migration is valuable in cancer diagnosis, prognosis, drug dev...
متن کاملCell coordination of collective migration by Rab11 and Moesin
Cell migration is an important process involved in developmental events and in pathologies such as cancer. Cell migration can be classified into two types: individual and collective cell movements. Compared with individual migration, collective cell migration is less understood and has drawn increasing attention lately because of its emerging role in cancer spreading. We have recently establish...
متن کاملLeader cell positioning drives wound-directed collective migration in TGFβ-stimulated epithelial sheets
During wound healing and cancer metastasis, cells are frequently observed to migrate in collective groups. This mode of migration relies on the cooperative guidance of leader and follower cells throughout the collective group. The upstream determinants and molecular mechanisms behind such cellular guidance remain poorly understood. We use live-cell imaging to track the behavior of epithelial sh...

Collective cell migration is ubiquitous in biology, from development to cancer; it occurs in complex systems comprised of heterogeneous cell types, signals and matrices, and requires large scale regulation in space and time. Understanding how cells achieve organized collective motility is crucial to addressing cellular and tissue function and disease progression. While current two-dimensional m...

The present study was conducted in order to investigate the pharmacological activities of three heterobimetallic coordination compounds: [Cd(N-bishydeten)2][Ni(CN)4] (C1), [Cu2(N-bishydeten)2Co(CN)6].3H2O (C2), and K[Cd(N-bishydeten)Co(CN)6].1.5H2O (C3) (N-bishydeten = N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine). This paper describes the ability of complexes to inhibit cell growth, cell migration ...
